Centennial Song & Music

Dr. Tom Porter, Professor of Music at the University of Mary, was commissioned to write a centennial hymn for our celebration. The composition, "Lord, in Every Generation," is based on the centennial scripture passage, Psalm 90:1, "Lord, you have been our refuge through all generations," as well as the centennial theme "Perseverance in Faith."

In order for the centennial hymn to be accessible to all parishes, Dr. Porter wrote the piece so it can be used in a number of different ways. Using the full score, a congregation can sing the new hymn melody in its entirety, or may learn the refrain of the hymn, with the verses sung by cantor or choir. The cantor or choir may also sing the refrain, and the congregation can sing the antiphon version, a very simple melody written to the Psalm text. This psalm text can also be used as a seasonal psalm response.

The hymn text uses a traditional metrical pattern, which means that parishes with limited musical resources could sing the text to very familiar melodies, such as "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore you," "Alleluia, Sing to Jesus," or "Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly." The text and/or music may be reprinted as needed for distribution in the parish.

Bishop Zipfel encourages all parishes to learn and sing this beautiful song starting immediately so it becomes a song of prayer for the June celebration. There will also be a volunteer diocesan choir for the celebration and if you are interested in singing or playing please complete the volunteer form below. Copies of the full score, text, antiphon, refrain and assembly parts are available below by clicking on the appropriate link.

Parishes may download and copy the music and / or text for the hymn during the year of the jubilee at no cost.

Also available is a volunteer form as a Word document for the Centennial Choir. Please use this form when listing the performers.
