The Diocese of Bismarck was established December 31, 1909 and formally "erected" by Rome March 21, 1910.
Its 34,268 square mile area is located in western North Dakota and is comprised of Adams, Billings, Bowman, Burke, Burleigh, Divide, Dunn, Emmons, Golden Valley, Grant, Hettinger, McKenzie, McLean, Mercer, Morton, Mountrail, Oliver, Renville, Sioux, Slope, Stark, Ward and Williams counties.
The total population in the 23 counties is approximately 260,300; the Catholic population is approximately 62,000. Diocesan demographic statistics can be found in the Pastoral Planning section of this website.
