Bishop David D. Kagan, D.D., J.C.L.
Bishop David D. Kagan

The Episcopal Ordination and Installation of Bishop David D. Kagan, 7th Bishop of Bismarck, was celebrated with great joy Wednesday, November 30, 2011, the Feast of St. Andrew, at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck.

The gathering included more than a dozen Bishops from around the country, close to one hundred concelebrating priests, representatives from parishes throughout the diocese of Western North Dakota, dignitaries and special guests. Please click HERE to view a slide show of photos from that event.

Following the reading of the Apostolic Letter from Pope Benedict XVI, by His Excellency The Most Reverend Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, appointing Kagan as Bishop of the Diocese of Bismarck, those present in the packed Cathedral witnessed as The Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt, Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis, ordained Bishop Kagan - anointing him with Sacred Chrism, signifying the fullness of the priesthood of Christ which he received through the laying on of Hands and the Prayer of Ordination.

The Most Reverend Paul A. Zipfel, Bishop Emeritus and Apostolic Administrator of Bismarck and The Most Reverend Thomas G. Doran, Bishop of Rockford were co-consecrators of the liturgy.

Although, due to limited seating, the Ordination Mass was a ticketed event, live coverage was made available for all through live television, radio and internet video streaming.

It was broadcast over KPHA FM 91.3 Real Presence Radio and live-streamed on the internet courtesy of the Diocese of Rockford, Bishop Kagan's home diocese.

This broadcast is available for replay on the Diocese of Rockford website with sponsorship from the University of Mary.

According to Ron Schatz, diocesan Director of Stewardship and Development, and event committee co-chair, receptions will be scheduled throughout the diocese for the newly appointed Bishop Kagan sometime following his installation. "We would like everyone in the diocese to get to show him our gracious North Dakota hospitality," Schatz said, so we are making arrangements to have receptions in each of our deaneries as soon as possible after his installation."

Please pray for our bishop and for our entire diocesan family.
Upon his ordination and installation Kagan became the 7th Bishop of Bismarck.
